The OHS Act (Occupational Health and Safety Act) is imporant for keeping every South African employee safe. Its opening paragraph reads:

"To provide for the health and safety of persons at work and for the health and safety of persons in connection with the use of plant and machinery; the protection of persons other than persons at work against hazards to health and safety arising out of or in connection with the activities of persons at work; to establish an advisory council for occupational health and safety; and to provide for matters connected therewith."

As an employer:

  • It is your responsibility to ensure the safety of your employees.
  • Failing to adhere to the Act, may result in your company fail health and safety inspections. This could result in a temporary closure of your business and massive damage to your and your company‚Äôs reputation!
  • Should something happen to someone at your workplace and it is found that it was due to you contravening the Act, you will face a fine or even imprisonment.
